Lives for Sale: Biographers' Tales
Edited by Mark Bostridge

lives for sale

My contribution to Mark Bostridge's Lives For Sale was the first time I'd been asked to write autobiographically. For a biographer, that felt like a slightly unsettling turning of the tables, but it was fun, too. On the whole, I feel that the more biographers are seen and heard in their works, the less well they must be functioning, but Mark's book was a chance to throw off discretion and talk about some of the intensely personal aspects of investigating someone else's life.

From reviews of Lives for Sale:

A fascinating collection of essays on the experience of following in the tracks of another person
Publishers Weekly

An impressive group of contributors gets to grips with the “peculiarly British vice of life writing”’
Sunday Telegraph
